Learn with Music and Song

Throughout all of our FUN classes we use music to assist the students with their learning.
Music and song is motivating and definitely makes LEARNING FUN.
All children (and adults too) learn better when exposed to music in their learning environment.  It was of course, then one of the highly important elements to add to the program when designing the ED Specially 4U school readiness program.
All of our programs use as many hands-on and motivating learning experiences as possible.  We believe in making learning fun.  We have created a custom designed set of learning resources to motivate, teach for comprehension and to reinforce number/literacy concepts.
The great advantage to visual singing resources is that they offer a motivating opportunity for children to understand the lyrics of the songs, as well as offering a visual cue to sequence the songs in correct order.

Each of the resources use different elements to assist the learner, whether it be images that can be manipulated to reinforce the song, or several pieces in each pack so students can have a hands-on learning experience with them.

Letter Craft – Letter t, Terrence the Turtle

Now that your children have returned home from this week’s lesson about letter t, it’s a great time to reinforce the sound /t/ they have been learning with their teacher.  We recommend completing your normal activities; pointing out the words that start with the sound /t/, practice saying the sound and reading our class reader to reinforce the sound and words that start with the sound.

Phonics 4U – Introduction to Phonics ED Specially 4U

For a decade the ED Specially 4U literacy programs have taught hundreds of children how to read or started them on their road to literacy.  We are immensely proud of the unique program that has been developed based on over 20 years of classroom instruction.

What is phonics?  Quite simply, it is the relationship between the letters (graphemes) and sounds (phonemes). 10 Ways to Reinforce School Readiness at home

We are often asked ‘What can we do at home to develop our child’s School Readiness Skills?’
Home preparation in School Readiness is different to how we teach School Readiness in our classes.
This difference is important.
Children in the preschool age range need to be developing their social and emotional skills at home and preschool settings.  They need to learn through play and exploration.

The academic skills we encourage during school readiness classes are provided in enough detail during the class.  EDSpecially4U classes offer structured learning activities as an introduction to school, but they are not how your child should spend the majority of their week.
There are some nice ways that you can reinforce the learning from our classes through play and exploration.

Welcome to Term 4!

This is always our busiest term with many new students joining our classes in preparation for classes or starting school next year.

It is such an exciting term, and the lead up to Christmas is so busy that this term always rushes by too quickly.
Our School Readiness program gives our students exposure to the academic skills they will further develop at BIG school. As always we recommend that you spend some time reinforcing the skills that we have taught each week.  Please refer to any of our hand outs and information

Phonological Awareness 1: Rhyme Time

When I speak with parents about our program, I often discuss Phonological Awareness. This is important in our program as it is such an important part of learning to read:

Teach Rhyme with Nursery Rhymes

We have a great time exploring nursery rhymes in our ‘Little ED 4 School’ and ‘Learn 4 School’ programs.  Nursery rhymes are such an important learning experience.

A very important part of our learning program is the development of ‘Phonemic Awareness’.

PHONEMIC AWARENESS is essential for reading competence.  Phonemic Awareness is the reader’s ability to hear the sounds (phonemes) and manipulate them.  The ability to hear and use rhyme is an important ingredient in early reading development.
The ED Specially 4U ‘Little ED 4 School’ and ‘Learn 4 School’ programs have a strong emphasis on developing phonemic awareness skills in our early learners.  We love to use Nursery Rhymes to reinforce rhyme.

Is your child ready for the ‘BIG’ school Maths Curriculum?

Mathematics includes many skill areas,these are broken into smaller sections by the curriculum. ACARA (the new Australia wide curriculum) divides maths into the following strands:

Whole Numbers
Addition and Subtraction
Multiplication and Division
Fractions and Decimals
Patterns and Algebra

 

These strand areas are covered in the Early Stage 1 curriculum—from the time your child enters BIG school. Autumn/Fall Crafts

If your neighbourhood is like mine at the moment, you will have access to many beautiful coloured leaves!

It is such fun to enjoy this time of year as a  learning opportunity.

The very best part of these art activities is definitely the time that you take to find the leaves.  Take your toddler/preschooler into the garden or for a walk in the neighbourhood and let them choose a bag of autumn leaves.  Don’t forget to talk, talk, talk with your child about what they are seeing.   Introduce them to vocabulary about the leaves – colour, shape, texture.  Talk about what they can see, feel and how they feel if they get the chance to crunch through older fallen leaves.   Usually when you ask a child what colour a leaf is – they will respond with ‘green’.  Autumn is the perfect opportunity to display how leaves can be all sorts of colours.
Once you have selected the leaves, now you can start creating !!
