abc 4 me : PHONICS: Initial Sounds Instruction and Wall Charts
In 2004 the Australian Government - Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations announced the findings of the National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy. The findings of this report included: . \\\\\\\"..the evidence indicates that all children are provided with the best opportunities for success in learning to read when teachers integrate the following skills via explicit instruction in: phonemic awareness: the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in oral language; phonics: the relationships between letters and sounds; fluency: the ability to read quickly and naturally, recognise words automatically, and group words quickly; vocabulary knowledge: new words and what they mean; and text comprehension: understanding what is being read and developing higher-order thinking skills. Because these are essential skills for the development of competence in reading, writing and spelling, they must be taught early, systematically, explicitly and well....\\\\\\\" It is upon research such as the National Inquiry and the NSW English K-6 literacy interim support document for students experiencing learning difficulties, that the resources of abc 4 me have been created. Direct instruction resources include our phonemic awareness products {Nursery Rhymes 4 U} and phonics {LETTER STARS}, as the key starting points for your literacy programs. Phonic Letter Stars are the beginning instruction point for phonics instruction. This resource uses a direct instruction teaching technique. These direct instructional techniques are then built upon in the ED Specially 4U phonic games, using the learnt skills to generalise across other learning situations.
Letter Stars
STEP 1 FOR PHONICS INSTRUCTION
LETTER STARS are unique to ED Specially 4U. This is the beginning resource for explicit instruction of phonics, using the abc 4 me resource kit.
LETTER STARS are designed to teach initial letter sounds. This fantastic resource, enables the teacher/tutor to introduce each letter on it’s own, using the star design and colour to assist early letter learning. Letters are taught without any distractions, only using colour and shape to enhance learning.
Students are clearly taught each letter, followed by the introduction of graphics to assist with initial letter sound concept recognition. All letter colours, and graphics are used consistently throughout the abc phonic resource range, so that the student learns to recognise the letters via a multi-sensory approach. These colours and graphics are faded within further phonic games and activities resources available from ED Specially 4U.
Recommended use; for example:
discuss with students that the letter is a and the sound is /a/. Once they are confident with this; you can introduce each graphic and emphasise that the starting sound of each graphic is /a/. Graphics come in both photo and line drawing sets, depending on the appropriate level for your students.
LETTER STARS come with a CD comprising of each letter of the alphabet. With a fantastic beat, the PHONICS 4U CD, explicitly teaches students letter name, sound and names of words which begin with the letter of the alphabet. This CD is unique to abc 4 me and is thoroughly enjoyed by students. Even non-verbal students have attempted sounds and singing with this CD!

Large Phonic Circles
Large Phonic Circles by ED Specially 4U are identical colours, shapes and graphics to the Letter Star resource. These circles can be purchased instead of the Letter Stars, for large group instruction, or for students with sight impairment. These are larger circles with a diameter of 14cms. All 26 letters of the alphabet are included.

Phonic Flashcards
Flashcards are designed to be used in conjunction with the abc 4 me LETTER STAR resources. The graphics used are in direct relationship with the colours and graphics used in the LETTER STAR resources.
This is another bright and visually stimulating resource. These cards use the colours, and graphics from the LETTER STARS, however they are expanding the students skill level, as they do not have the star shape cue.
The flashcards allow the teacher or parent to show the word with both line drawing and photo graphic. The students can learn to read the word as a sight word, without the star shape cue.
Once the words have been used to skill building, they can then be placed on the classroom ‘word wall’ for constant reinforcement and creative writing sessions.
It is recommended that the teacher/parent then use the abc 4 me MATCHING CARDS resource to further develop this skill.

Initial sounds Speech Assistance Book
For children who have trouble pronouncing initial sounds of words, this flip book is a fantastic resource. The graphics in this resource are as used in the LETTER STAR resource. Each letter has a page for all 5 graphics. These graphics are matched with the written word to reinforce the starting sound of each word. Children can read through the graphics trying to pronounce the initial sound correctly.
This is extremely effective when used with the PHONICS 4U CD (found under Initial sounds Direct Instruction), as music and singing models the correct pronunciation and assists the student to remember.
